Benchmarking Enabling Programs Across Australia: What We Learned and Why It Matters

Research

The landscape of Enabling Education in Australia has matured significantly over the past two decades. As universities continue to broaden participation and create pathways for students from diverse backgrounds, the need for consistent evidence, shared practice and meaningful evaluation has become increasingly important.

One of the most significant milestones in this journey has been the national benchmarking of Enabling programs. By examining how institutions design, deliver and evaluate Enabling education, the sector has been able to identify common strengths, recognise innovation and better understand where future opportunities lie.

Benchmarking is far more than comparing numbers. It provides educators with an opportunity to learn from one another, reflect on their own practice and identify approaches that improve student outcomes. It also helps demonstrate the value of Enabling programs to universities, government and the wider higher education sector.

The benchmarking work highlighted the remarkable diversity of Australia’s Enabling programs. While each institution responds to the needs of its own community, common themes emerged around student-centred learning, inclusive curriculum design, academic skills development and holistic student support.

Importantly, the report reinforced what Enabling educators to have long understood: student success depends not only on academic preparation, but also on belonging, confidence and connection. Programs that intentionally foster these elements help students transition successfully into undergraduate study and remain engaged throughout their university journey.

For NAEEA members, the benchmarking initiative represents another example of the collaborative spirit that defines the Association. By openly sharing data, experiences and ideas, institutions have contributed to a stronger evidence base for the entire sector.

As Enabling education continues to evolve, benchmarking will remain an important tool for continuous improvement. It encourages reflection, supports innovation and provides a foundation for future research that benefits educators and students alike.

NAEEA encourages members to continue engaging with sector research, sharing successful practices and contributing to the ongoing conversation about what excellence in Enabling education looks like across Australia.
